Thrace Pigeon

General Information on Thrace Pigeons
Trakya Güvercini - This breed is raised only in the small towns of Kırklareli, Tekirdağ and its vicinity in Thrace. Most likely a relative race with their Oriental Roller (reels). Their body structures are medium sized birds that resemble Oriental Roles.

However, unlike the Orientals, the tail consisting of 14-18 wires is not perpendicular in this race, and the wings are usually carried on the tail. Birds are found near the tail, carrying one under the tail or both under the tail.

Such individuals are generally hybrid animals. Because, many pigeon breeds have been imported from Balkan Countries in recent years. The crossbreeding effect is also evident from the shortened beaks. In purebred (pure breed) animals, the beak is of medium size. This breed is available only in plain white, black, smoky blue with black stripes, red and rarely yellow and smoky flint colors. the Blue; ashy, flintlock; tabby and yellows; called canary. Breeders are very sensitive to the absence of white feathers in colorful birds. The beak color is white in all feather colors and there is a stain on the tip that depends on the feather color of the bird. Purple beak color is also encountered in blue. Except whites, all eyes are light. In the whites, only black eyes are encountered. The legs of medium length are hairless. Growers are very sensitive in this regard. So much so that the appearance of very small feathers at the feet of the nestlings in the nest (These feathers are usually shed in the change of offspring feathers and new ones are not replaced), no matter how perfect they are, they are not used in breeding. Crested or topless birds are seen in this breed. The crown should start under the neck, wrap the neck well, and prominent hill roses should be seen on both sides under the upside down ear. Roses on one side, a slit appearance, the hill starting from the top of the neck and narrow-crowned birds are not used in breeding. Since growers are sensitive about pairing each color with their own color, a certain structural difference is noticeable between the colors. This is especially true for whites. Because the colored birds are mated between them, again, plain colored offspring are obtained. Therefore, such mating is relatively tolerated. However, if one of the pairs is white, the offspring becomes piquant.

These birds are very frightened. When you enter the poultry house they meet you with their voices and when you try to catch someone, they climb the walls. Breeders of this breed aimed to raise beautiful birds with good flight characteristics. However, the flight characteristics of these pigeons have declined in recent years as more weight has been given to the outer appearance. As I mentioned before, the fact that the birds brought from the Balkans and hybridized were show birds, accelerated this phenomenon. In the past, flight features would precede their appearance. Birds that were tall, high-flying, and often did not roll (reel), but who rolled quality (roll), were valued. In the past, collective lines were encountered, and after a certain height, somebody somersaults himself down like a rope and others follow. It was just like many spiders releasing themselves with their threads. After returning 10 to 20 meters, they would recover and rise again. Sometimes breeders released another group (fleet) to encourage their birds to return. Sometimes many birds such as 40-50 were released. They would meet in the air in groups of five or ten and they would fly at different heights regardless of each other. Another bad feature of this breed other than timidness is that they have less reaction to bird display and even completely ignore it. So they are a little difficult to manage. Today, there are still few birdbirds that still target flight characteristics. So much so that there are still birds (flying) that fly and raise at the height of 3 to 5 hours under this race.
