General Information
Seljuk Pigeon "Seljuk", "Selcuk" or "Enseli" as they are said in public in Konya are local birds specific to Konya region, which was once the capital of the Anatolian Seljuk state. The word "nape" here is used for the tail section of the bird.
This race is known in the world by the names "Seljuk Fantail", "Sedjucken". Mevlana, known to live in the 1200s, is registered in the textures he feeds from these birds. The followers, who followed him, raised them from these birds and made important contributions to the protection and breeding of the breed.
It is known that during the Anatolian Seljuk period, these pigeons were raised and kept under protection in Seljuk palaces in Konya. After the Seljuk state, these birds, which were carried out meticulously by a few wealthy families and were not given out in any way, including sales or gifts, came to the Ottoman palace much later. In his narratives about Istanbul in 1635, Evliya Çelebi does not mention the Seljuk pigeons while counting the pigeon species in Istanbul. In fact, the arrival of these pigeons in the Ottoman palace, after 1875, II. It was during the reign of Abdülhamid's Sultanate.
It is interpreted that this breed is a race that entered Anatolia with Anatolian Seljuks, since these pigeons are not encountered much outside Konya. Indeed, the fact that this type of pigeon is very common in Seljuk miniature paintings supports what is said in this subject. In addition, the verbal expressions of the oldest birders, who gave information about the Ottoman period of Konya, also confirm this position.
Selcuk pigeons are not widely known all over the country and their characteristics are not known well. In fact, although there is a long article about pigeon breeding in Konya on the web site prepared by Konya Municipality, it is very thought provoking and worrying that the Selcuk race is not mentioned at all. The fact that the old pigeon enthusiasts who have grown this breed in Konya has been decreasing gradually, has made the issue even more serious. Today, the future of this race is under serious threat. Therefore, it must be strictly protected.
In recent years, some birds related to this race have been exported and produced. However, it is not common abroad and the original form of the race could not be preserved. According to the information given in this subject in a German source, a couple was seen in a show in Nurnberg in 1982 and the other in a show in Stuttgart in 1991. I think that the fact that this race is not known and raised outside Konya is due to the fact that an intense effort was made to protect this race during the Seljuk period, and even bans could be brought out of Konya. In the Ottoman period, a really intense effort was made to protect this race in Konya. It is remarkable that the breeding of these pigeons began to be carried out in the late period of the Ottoman state with the collective effort of famous birdbirds in Konya. In the Konya tradition, great banquets, which were called "fenfen" in the past, were attended by each of the guests by bringing a tool and equipment. After this feast, the birds were taken out of the rag cloth called the under-table, which spread to the middle of the room. It was decided by the common opinion of all birdbirds that which bird should be matched with which. It is certain that this event has a very important function in terms of breeding of the race. Another information is that for an akkuyrukkara who was kidnapped by a person known as the son of Deli Hacı Ali, one of the former wealthy people of Konya, he took it back to the person who caught it by giving him a buffalo. So he was able to protect the bird's vein. All this is an indication of whether Seljuk pigeons are valued in good time. It is truly painful that these birds have become extinct due to indifference and indifference today. The most famous birdbirds known to have raised these pigeons in Konya were raised from Çelebi. This human being raised Seljuk birds in mansions and summer cottages in Meram. The main ones are Rafet zade Hüseyin efendi, Hacı Kamil Çelebi, Büyük Selahattin, tiny Selahattin Çelebiler, Hüsamettin Çelebi, Mehmet Bahattin Çelebi, Cultist Cemal Çelebi and his son Eyyüp Çelebi and Arif Çelebi. Apart from these, İbrahim Babadağ, Hacı İsmail Unı and famous instrumentalist Latif Çavuş. In addition, it is known that all aristocratic families of Konya such as Nakıp zadlar and Mecidiye zadlar are always birds and bird keepers. Apart from these, there were many bird enthusiasts from our Greek and Armenian citizens. The children of Yusuf Şar are Sarafyan, Solakyan, Kazaros, Sofoklis from Greeks known as Soğuklu. It is told that another Greek, known as the clerk, has very beautiful birds.
Selcuk Pigeons PropertiesSelcuk pigeons are a form race. Appearance and color features are always at the forefront. Therefore, they are not released for flight, they feed in the nest and in the garden. As soon as they are blown, they do not go far, they make several turns around the nest. While these birds fly in the style of straight play, a single flip game can be seen. Those who play are considered more acceptable, but those who do not lose their value. Selcuk birds have their own typical forms. First of all, they are small-built birds. Birdbirds especially prefer smaller ones. It is appropriate that the lengths of the Selcuk birds between the chest and the anus are elastic compared to a measurement form called "a flexible" in birders and created by opening the thumb and the finger on its side about 8 centimeters. In connection with a flexible measure, Seljukian birds are preferred with shorter waist. The bodies of these birds have a lumpy appearance. Her breasts are slightly curved and round. The head stands a little backwards. This posture is compared to the posture of Arabian horses and is called "mare head". The neck is not too long. They have a beak structure of medium length and thickness. The mouth structures are attractive (wide). The eyes are large and round in a broadly so-called style, the ring around the eyes is wide. The eye contour ring is white or quince yellow. Eye color can be white, black, blue or slightly red. Sometimes red lines called "daffodils" can be seen inside the gas, those with this feature are not preferred. Feet have short legs. They have no legs. These birds can be with or without a sweatshirt. In those with a plug, the back tacq extends from ear to ear. The most remarkable features are tail structures. The tail part of the bird named "nape" should be wide. All Seljuk birds become nape. The tail is raised up in the style of "decks" or "ball" tail and is triangular. Sometimes it is also seen that the tail is in the form of a semicircle in the style called "bridged nape". The tail shape is slightly upward and spectral, just like the Peacock pigeons. It is preferred that the tail is standing up. Tail telek numbers are much higher than regular pigeons. This number can be minimum 24 –26 and maximum 36. They are named by different names according to the queue format. The shape of the tail in appearance may be full or open. According to this feature, Seljuk birds are divided into two groups and evaluated. In the filled ones, the wires are arranged in a row one under the other. This is called "sword stuffing" and is the reason for preference. If the tail wires are open inside, if the wires are lined at an angle instead of one another, this is called "open nape". On open necks, the tail is hollow. In addition, there are the terms "sting tail" and "plunge" used to describe the tail. Those who play in the form of a single somersault while flying, those who are wearing an ear to ear, those with big and round heads, those with short thick and white mouths, those with long and back necks, those with a short waist, those who are called "mare heads" are curved towards the body. The elastic size, the wide eye frame, the whites of which are white and without capillaries, the cotton line under the abdomen, the non-white feathers, the stuffed nape of the sword, the number of tail wires, and the stance of the tail that touches the head.
Selcuk Pigeons History
According to the leading approach in general, it is thought that Seljuks brought only plain white, plain black and sky-colored pigeons from Central Asia when coming to Anatolia. It is known that the different colors seen today were developed after the breeding works in Anatolia. Today, the main colors encountered in these pigeons are named as follows; Ak, Kara, Gök, Çopur, Akkuyrukkara. In addition, there are colors called Pal and Ala. It is a color that came to Anatolia with the Seljuks. The characteristic of these color birds is that all their bodies are white. They are also called as "necked white." It is a color that came to Anatolia with the Seljuks. The feature of these color birds is that all their bodies are black. They are also called "enseli black" or "enseli zidgara". Those with wide and white eyes are acceptable.
It is a color that came to Anatolia with the Seljuks. The general color of these birds is light sky. Briefly, the body is in a mixture of light blue and gray. It is also called "nape of the sky". Those whose colors are close to ashy (darker sky color) and those with whiteness on them are not liked. There is no pencil (ribbon) on the sky-colored wings in the Seljuk pigeons. This color is a faint structure. There may be a row of stripes horizontally towards the tip in the tail wires. Wing tip tips and tail tips are more acceptable. Those with blue beadsGerlinde is. Those with red eyes are not acceptable. The individual who develops and improves the sky color is known by the name of "Akkipriğin uncle" and the famous bird, Haci Ismail Aga. Even today, they are known as "Uncle Sexual". It is also known as "Enseli pal". It can arise as a result of the match between Ak and Gök, as it can occur with the match of Ak and the sky. In these birds, the color is a mixture of white and sky. It is the general color accumulation that dominates the body. The tail is often milk white. The color mix can be anywhere on the body. Since the Seljuk pigeons are a form bird, color is very important in these birds. Therefore, pal color birds are not valued at all. In fact, many ancient birdbirds do not count this color in the colors of the Seljuk pigeon.
It is a combination of colors obtained by mating white and black. The concept of Ala is often used in pigeons in the case of mixed color. In pigeons, the basic parts of the body in the form of head, body, wings and tail are different from each other and their uniform distribution can be realized as a separate color. In the Seljuk pigeons, these birds are called ala if the head is black and black in color, the back is black and white, and the tail is milk white. Alalar are often flirty-eyed. Tail forms are open nape.
It is a color developed in the Ottoman period as a result of the breeding work carried out in the Seljuk breed pigeons. The head color in these birds is light sky. Indeed, the bird's head is slightly ash and grayish in color. This color cuts across the length, or rather ends here. White color starts from the end point. It is not preferred if the sky is lowering to tons. On the sky tone that dominates the head, there may sometimes be a straight and white line called the "jackal" that begins over the bird's beak and maintains it to the middle of the head. This is considered acceptable in the color of loops. Especially in the waist part of the bird, there should be no sky-tone color. The waist of the bird should also be white. The general color that dominates the body is white. Only the wings become dark gray and black in a tone that we can call smoked. There are two rows of pens on the wing. Çopur, whose wing tips are dark olive tone, are considered more valuable. Sometimes white wires called "calli" can be found on the wing. These types of loops, called "Çallı Çopur", are considered worthless. In the hoops, the tail is completely white. There are also black-tailed hoops called only "blacktail locks". The tail form can be stuffed to the sword or an open nape tail.
Çopurlar is also eye-colored. The flint eye can be blue moire or beige moire. One eye of a lofty pigeon is struck by the black eye. Half of the eye is Çakır and half is black. The pebble can be found under the eye, above or on the side. Çopur is a color type developed as a result of matching of white and sky. Çopur, karakuyruk çopur and celestial colors are obtained from the match between the sky and the white. From the matching of Çopur and Çopur, 80% pal, 15% çopur and 5% white are obtained. The individual who develops the color of Çopur by breeding and is fanatical to this color is Elifin İbrahim Babadağ. It can be said that we owe this continuation of the color of Çopur to a person who had a bird's head in the mansion of Hacı Nafizlar in Konya for the most part of his life. There is another interesting data about the child; Ottoman Sultan II. It is known that Abdülhamid has been interested in birds since his princes. After becoming a sultan, he ruled the country for 33 years between 1876 and 1909. Osman Efendi, who forms the bird's head of the sultan, is the grandparents of our national football player Şükrü and Rüştü. At this time, there were 32 more bird workers working in the Ottoman Palace affiliated to Osman Efendi. One of these birders is Rıza Efendi, one of the opponents from Konya. II. Abdulhamid heard the beauty of the Seljuk birds and sent Rıza Efendi to Konya, collecting all the varieties of these birds and brought them to the palace in Istanbul. Upon this, Rıza Efendi came to Konya, fulfilled the order of the Sultan and went to Istanbul by collecting the birds. The sultan liked the color, which is called the most tactic, within the incoming birds and reassigned Rıza Efendi to bring more of this color. However, Rıza Efendi found only three more of this color and came back to Istanbul. As a matter of fact, after seeing the beauties of Seljuk birds, the Sultan dismissed the foreign birds in his hand and sent these birds to Konya for free to those who want to raise them from Konya. These birds were distributed free of charge to Konya people, by means of Chief Commissioner Bendelli İbrahim Efendi, who was also a famous birder at that time, at the Konya Police Station. Indeed, it confirms this information in the Ottoman archive catalogs of that period. There are sooner. In my research in this archive, I have come across several documents showing that the pigeon exchange between Konya and the palace is very alive. In a document dated 1883, there is a document regarding the delivery of pigeons from Konya to Istanbul to Captain İbrahim Ağa. In a document dated 1893, non-hybrid pigeons are required from Konya. In another document dated 1899, it is stated that 195 pairs of pigeons were sent from Istanbul to be distributed to those who desire from Konya people. It was a color developed in the Ottoman period as a result of the breeding work carried out in the Seljuk breed pigeons. The body and wings of these birds are black and the tail is completely white. They were developed in a long time as a result of matching of Ak and Karası. From this pairing, birds in the so-called ala, mavrullukara, akkuyrukkara, are obtained. Mavrullukara is a name given to akkuyruk black tails whose tail is black and white mixed color. In addition to this, it is possible to encounter feather and string color features, which are also named as string, stranded and overwired land. The individual working on the breeding of this breed in the Ottoman period is Hüseyin Çelebi, one of Rafet Çelebi's sons. Therefore, it can be said that we owe the color of Akkuyrukkara to this person. Akkuyrukkaralar can be with and without attachment. Ear to ear caps are considered more precious. The tail form can be open nape or stuffed with sword. Stuffed tails to the sword are more desirable. The eye should be large and framed. Eye colors can be white, green and red. Eye-colored ones are preferred. Those with red eyes are considered worthless as they come from a mixture with other necked pigeons.
Current Status of Seljuk Gueverins
In my investigation in Konya to investigate the current situation of the Seljuk pigeons, I observed that those who breed these pigeons are very low today and are mostly preferred among the old and old birders of Konya. The number of those who breed these pigeons in Konya today is 10 to 15 individuals. I guess that the number of individuals of this breed is about 200 - 250 birds. Apart from Konya, these pigeons are not found anywhere in our country. Some of the bird breeders stated that they took them from Konya and took them to Eskikent. I just do not have any information about whether this race exists in Eskişehir today. In the bird market, which is set up in the "immigrant market" every Sunday in Konya, tumbler pigeons are generally sold and there are plenty of them. There were only 3 pairs of Seljuk pigeons. These were too bad in form. The thing that caught my attention the most in Seljuk pigeons was that the color diversity of this breed has decreased. Currently, there are only sky and akkuyrukkara colors in Konya. the other colors are gone. In other words, he is extinct. These extinct colors are ak, kara, çopur, pal and ala. I learned that the owner of the company "Deksan" in Konya is curious about these pigeons and that they have tried to raise their good types. They even said that by paying 8 billion they bought 4 Seljuk pigeons. Compared to what is said, this person had a different color. I could not get full information about the subject since I could not meet with this person. I met with Salim Bekler, who raised these pigeons in Konya, got some information from him, examined his birds and took their photos.
